Septic tanks are the heart of septic systems, but not all homeowners understand regular pumping is needed to keep them healthy. Homes featuring a septic system must rely on regular maintenance to avoid overflows, backups, and other problems.

The septic system specialists at Gecko Enterprises have more than 27 years of experience helping the people of Oahu clean and maintain their septic tanks. One of the most frequent questions they’re asked is: “How often should I pump out my septic tank?”

Many septic tanks are built to hold up to three years’ worth of sludge, but the answer depends on four factors:

  • septic tankHow Big Is Your Household? The amount of people who use your home’s utilities will contribute to the amount of sludge left behind in your septic system.
  • How Much Waste Do You Generate? All of the wastewater a household generates goes through its septic system. Therefore, the number of times you flush a toilet or take showers matters.
  • How Big Is Your Septic Tank? Smaller septic tanks must be pumped more frequently than larger tanks. Generally, septic tanks are designed to hold waste for at least three years.
  • What Is the Volume Of Solids In Your Wastewater? A septic system specialist can use formulas to determine the sedimentation and loadings for your household.

As a basic rule, septic tanks feature a T-shaped outlet, which prevents scum and sludge from traveling to the drain field area.  If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches or the top of the sludge is within 12 inches of the bottom of the outlet, the tank needs to be pumped.
