Many people aren’t sure what to do when there is an emergency issue with the gums, teeth, or jaw. Always call your dental office to get the problem checked out, but there are a few things you can do to immediately prevent further damage if you knock out a tooth, break a tooth, or lose a crown. The emergency dentists at Preferred Dental Care Chelsea can give you a few tips on what to do if you’re having an oral issue that needs immediate attention.
Knocked Out Tooth
If you lose a tooth or it is somehow knocked out, you may be able to save it. Gently rinse the tooth under water to remove debris. If you can, gently hold the tooth to the socket it fell out of until you reach your dentists office. If you cannot hold it in place, keep the tooth in a small bag of milk until you reach the office, where possibility of reattachment will be evaluated.
Immediately rinse a cracked or broken tooth with warm water. To reduce swelling, hold a cold compress against the broken tooth until you arrive at the dental office.
Temporary Crown Falls Out
If your temporary crown falls out but you haven’t lost it, dry your natural tooth, apply some toothpaste and place the temporary back in place. Dental wax or temporary adhesive will also do the job and are available at most local pharmacies. Make an appointment to have your crown reattached as soon as possible!
