Modern nursery design doesn’t have to mean pink and frilly, or blue and sporty, or covered in Elmo’s furry red likeness. Some of the best nursery spaces are clean, cool, and fully functional.

To pull off the modern look yourself, think of a nursery as a multipurpose room. It should fit your style (because really, what does baby know?!), be cozy and safe for baby, and give your growing bundle of joy a place to play and spark her creativity.

Need a spark for your own creativity? We hunted down some of the coolest modern nursery design ideas.

1. The great explorer

The charcoal furniture in this nursery is the perfect gender-neutral canvas, but we’re loving the mural. A simple mountain design anyone can do makes a big statement in this flying-above-the-clouds nursery.

2. Hollywood glitz

Still want pink? Look for updated shades such as this muted, modern hue. A few easy touches—like a beaded chandelier and bed canopy—add a ton of Hollywood glitz and glamor to this nursery without feeling like the small space is suffering from “theme overload.”

3. Rustic retreat

A simple wood-paneled wall and some neutral furniture are all it takes to make this nursery feel like its own little cabin in the woods. Bonus: Once baby grows up, you’ve got the perfect man cave.

4. Funky and mod

This nursery is funky and cool with a few Mid-Century Modern furnishings and some adorable pops of color. But the best part might be that awesome cactus wallpaper. Who says babies can’t be hip?

5. Dancing in diapers

This nursery takes mobiles to the next level with tons of brightly colored paper lanterns and—yup, you’re seeing that right—a disco ball. We’re betting baby will never be bored in this crib. To finish the look, refresh an older crib with a splash of bright coral.

6. Modular modern

Don’t have a ton of space for toys? This narrow nursery makes great use of space with hanging cubicles that can store books, stuffed animals, and toys. To keep the cubbies from being boring, thin wood panels in a honey shade complete the accent wall.

7. Industrial baby

There’s nothing frilly about this nursery. The exposed metal beam ceiling gives the space an edgy, industrial feel. The modern wood chandelier gives the room a funky focal point, while the simple tree-and-owl mural and delicate white crib keep the space soft.

8. Royal and edgy

A nursery doesn’t have to be soft to be sweet. This plush space stands out from the crowd with flat-black furniture, a beaded black chandelier, and a pop of rich color on a redaccent wall.
