If your Ohio driver's license has been suspended, you may be uncertain about what your next steps should be. Ohio Insurance Center Agency, the premier auto insurance company in Cincinnati, explains below what to do when you lose your driving privileges. Ohio Insurance Center Agency specializes in high-risk auto insurance and SR22 bond insurance to help you get back on the road as quickly as possible.

Below are the steps to take after having your license suspended:

  • Do Not Drive: Do not drive while your license is suspended or you may face additional penalties, depending on the seriousness of the original offense. For instance, if you are caught driving during suspension for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OVI) or for accumulating 12 points over a two-year period, you may receive six additional points, a longer suspension period, fines, probation, or even six months in jail.
  • Request Limited Driving Privileges: If you are convicted of a driving offense, you can petition the judge for limited driving privileges (LDP) if you need to drive for work, medical, educational, or vocational training purposes. Typically, an OVI conviction requires you to wait for some set period ("hard time") before you are eligible for LDP. If the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has suspended your license for failure to show proof of insurance during a traffic stop or for a 12-point violation, you can petition a court for LDP.
  • Request An Appeal: If you wish to contest the suspension, you can mail in a hearing request, contact the court that served your suspension, or appeal during your first court appearance. Typically, hearing requests must be received within 30 days of your suspension notice.
  • Complete insurance companyReinstatement Requirements: To get your license reinstated, you'll have to pay any fines, penalties, and reinstatement fees applicable to your situation. You must also show proof of insurance and buy SR22 bond insurance, by which your insurance company certifies you are up to date on premium payments.
