The words “nondenominational” and “interdenominational” are frequently used somewhat interchangeably when it comes to describing churches, but there are some rather important, albeit subtle, differences. Abiding Love in Foley, Alabama, is considered an interdenominational church mainly because it focuses on including everyone together under the common love of God, instead of purposefully refusing any affiliations or labeling themselves with a certain name.

To make it even clearer, here are a few more differences between nondenominational and interdenominational churches:

Nondenominational Churches

interdenominational churchesNondenominational churches refuse any affiliation with any Christian denomination and are completely autonomous. These churches set up their own rules and formats and do not abide by any formal religious guidelines other than their own. They usually reach out to people who want to switch over from stricter Christian branches.

Interdenominational Churches

Interdenominational churches include and celebrate all different denominations, and their staff is usually comprised of people of varying religious backgrounds as well. Many mission agencies and Bible schools, like the one at Abiding Love, are interdenominational.

These churches try to include practices from all denominations, usually offering prayers and services at all sorts of times in order to meet every individual’s needs. Interdenominational churches are autonomous, too, but usually base their worship on Christian doctrine and the Bible. However, their main focus is on the love and worship of God, not following the rules of any specific religion.

Abiding Love wishes to include people from all over and from all different Christian faiths to join together and hear the word of God. They focus on teaching people love, empathy, understanding, and faith so everyone’s lives can be full and happy.

The also have a Faith In Love Bible College to help students learn true love and devotion to God and their faith. The staff consists of teachers from all denominations, so the genuine focus can be on following the word of God alone.
