Winter will be here before you know it, and you don’t want to be forced to clean your heating oil tank when you need it most.
Apple Oil, located in West Haven, CT, has been helping the businesses and residents of Fairfield and New Haven counties stay warm for more than 30 years. Their technicians can help you service and maintain your heating oil tank so it runs efficiently in cold months. In addition to delivering heating oil to homes and businesses, their workers also perform efficiency tune-ups.
An efficiency tune-up is one of the best ways to spot sludge buildup inside your tank before it becomes a problem and clogs the nozzle, filter, or oil line. It’s not uncommon to find sludge near the burner tech during an oil filter change, and it’s a sure sign your heating oil tank needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.
Cleaning an oil tank is not recommended for inexperienced homeowners, and Apple Oil can perform the task for you. However, if you’re handy with tools, there are simple steps to follow to make sure your tank is clean and runs efficiently.
Remove All Contents
The first step is placing a container beneath the drain valve of your tank and draining all remaining oil into it. Once that task is done, place another container beneath the drain valve. Using a hose, spray water into the oil tank until the tank drains nothing but clear liquid. Make sure the drain cap is put securely back in place when you’re done.
Treat The Tank
Pour one cup of trisodium phosphate per every five gallons of water into the tank until it’s full. Next, insert an air hose inside the tank and turn it on, agitating the solution for at least 12 hours. Spray water into the tank again until it drains a clear liquid.
The final step is to dry the tank by using denatured alcohol and an air hose. Once done, replace the drain cap and refill the tank with heating oil.
