How to Tell the Difference Between Tex-Mex & Authentic Mexican Dishes, Manhattan, New York

Everybody loves Mexican cuisine; it's hard to resist the flavorful combination of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, seafood, exotic flavorings, and savory dressing. However, most Mexican dishes people know today are not traditional Mexican cooking, but Tex-Mex imitations.

Casa Agave NYC, the best authentic Mexican food restaurant located in Hell’s Kitchen, says there are many differences between Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food. How do you tell the difference between the two?

  • Tacos: The authentic Mexican taco is made of soft and lightly grilled tortilla. The toppings can be a combination of meat (pork, chicken, seafood, and beef), chopped guacamole, onions, cilantro, authentic Mexican white cheese, and various flavoring agents. The Tex-Mex version incorporates a crispy tortilla, chopped vegetables (usually lettuce and tomatoes), shredded cheese, and sour cream.
  • Burritos: The Tex-Mex burrito is very different from the original recipe. The Americanized burrito is filled with various vegetables, beans, meat, and rice. Tacos de Harina is much thinner and smaller; it also has fewer fillings than the Tex-Mex burrito.
  • Authentic MexicanNachos: Chilaquiles are fried corn tortillas and simmered with salsa. Unlike the Tex-Mex nachos, chilaquiles is spicier, and the toppings can be egg or chicken since it's a traditional breakfast dish in Mexico.
  • Enchiladas: The Tex-Mex enchiladas are rolled tortilla stuffed with ground beef and cheese, dipped in enchilada sauce and then baked in an oven. Genuine Mexican enchiladas are usually fried tortillas, doused in spicy enchilada gravy, and filled with meat, veggies and authentic Mexican cheese. Unlike the Tex-Mex version, it's not baked in an oven.
