Have you ever seen a beautifully detailed quilt and wondered how it was made? Well, wonder no more! Anyone in the Kihei, HI, area who is interested in learning basic quilting can sign up at The Maui Quilt Shop. They are now offering a two-hour introductory class on the history of Hawaiian quilting and basic techniques. During this class at the quilt shop, you will be given an opportunity to design and start on your very own 18” x 18” pillow cover or wall hanging.

Hawaiian quilting is still done the same way it was when it first began in the 1820s: by hand. If you have quilted before but have only ever used a machine, this basic quilting class will introduce you to some benefits you've been missing out on. Here are a few:

  • Inexpensive: It is not necessary to have a sewing machine to make your very own quilt. If you are not yet a dedicated quilter but want to make a unique quilt design, you can join the ranks of people who have been making quilts by hand for centuries. The only items you will need to acquire are fabric, scissors, pins, needles, thread, templates, and thimbles.

  • basic-quilting-kihei-hiPortable: Are you in the mood to sit outside and quilt? If you are quilting by hand, you are really not limited when it comes to where you can take your next project and work on it.

  • Precise: While taking a simple pattern and running it through a sewing machine can provide amazing results, it is no substitute for putting together complicated blocks with tricky seams yourself. Also, if your quilt design has detailed stitching, doing it by hand offers more control.

  • Calming: Sitting back with your fabric and needle in hand on the couch and unwinding is therapeutic. Sitting at a sewing machine can be fun, but it doesn't provide the relaxation that comes with hand quilting.

Are you ready to learn basic quilting? Then sign up for The Maui Quilt Shop's Traditional Hawaiian Quilting Class. It will be led by a veteran Hawaiian hand quilter and will take place every Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. To sign up for the class, call (808) 874-8050, or learn more about this Kihei quilt shop by visiting them online.
