When it comes to a vibrant, healthy smile, dental procedures are often necessary. While many people have a distaste for visiting the dentist office, revolutionary methods are changing the way people see the dentist. Lowitz & Meier, a family dentistry clinic located in Cincinnati, provides high-quality dental care, including dental crowns, bridges, root canals, porcelain veneers, dentures, and more.

They’ve offered a bit more insight into dental crowns and when they are necessary, including information about CEREC, a new procedure that makes crowns easy and convenient for patients.

What Is A Crown?

A dental crown can fix a broken, cracked, or heavily filled tooth, restoring it to its original size and shape. Commonly referred to as a cap, it fits securely onto the top of the tooth.

When Do I Need A Crown?

Dental CrownsIf you have a large crack or cavity, a crown is often necessary to prevent the tooth from cracking further and breaking. After a root canal, teeth are more brittle, and crowns are often implemented.

What Is The Crown Procedure?

Previously, crowns could take multiple visits in order to create the correct fit for the patients—molds were taken and then a piece was installed at a later visit. With the revolutionary CEREC, crown procedures can be completed in one day.

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It takes 3D images of the tooth that needs a crown and creates a template on the computer. The dentist examines the image and then inserts a small ceramic piece into the machine. In just twenty minutes, it is carved to match the image, and it is cemented into place by the dentist. It can all be done in one visit, making it more convenient for the patient.

If you are in need of dental crowns, consider finding a dentist that offers CEREC treatments. They make your visits quicker and more efficient.
