Monogramming was originally used as a royal signature, dating back to the 1400s. Roman and Greek rulers put their initials on family crests and coins to mark their reign. Today, Miss Monogram — Richmond, KY’s custom embroidery and screen-printing shop — says monogramming is less about showcasing power and more about personalizing belongings.

From apparel to handkerchiefs to bath towels, people enjoy monogramming their belongings to give them a personalized touch. Before you do this, however, Miss Monogram says there are several dos and don’ts you should be aware of to ensure you pieces look classy.

Take a look at these five monogramming etiquette rules before you have your items personalized:

  • Keep It Subtle: Monograms shouldn’t be the main focal point of an item. Instead, they should be a small touch just to enhance its look. Keep your design small, and consider choosing a color similar to that of the underlying fabric.
  • Place It Right: Knowing where to place your initials is key to creating a piece that doesn’t look tacky. If monogramming a shirt, stick to placing your initials on the pocket or cuffs. For other items, like handkerchiefs, stick to a small monogram in the corner.

  • One Is Enough: When personalizing your apparel or other items, stick to just one set of monogrammed letters. If you’ve done your shirt pocket, there’s no reason to also monogram your tie and pocket square. Remember, less is usually more.
  • Choose The Right Font: When monogramming something, whether it be for yourself or as a gift, choose the right font. If you want your item to have a more feminine look, stick with cursive, elegant letters. However, for a masculine appearance, choose more standard block letters.
  • Don’t Overdo Home Goods: Some people enjoy monogramming their houseware, like towels and sheets, but avoid personalizing everything you own. Stick to just a few pieces, like your pillowcases.
