There are many important reasons to have your child visit a pediatric dentist starting at a young age, and according to Dr. Allen Hirai at Pediatric Dentistry Kahala in Honolulu, HI, one of the most significant reasons is to teach them good dental habits early on. Starting with your child's first dentist visit, Dr. Hirai and his staff will begin working with you and your child to develop these practices. This will increase the likelihood that as your child ages and their permanent teeth begin coming in, there will be fewer dental problems to worry about.

For most children, their primary teeth will start to appear around six to eight months. Parents should see their child's teeth come in starting with the primary central incisors followed by the lateral incisors, bicuspids, canines, and second molars. Usually, the lower set of each tooth type will come in two months before the top set. By age three, all twenty primary teeth should be in place.

This is to help make room for their permanent teeth, which should start to come in around age six. Usually, the four molars will start coming in first but tend to go unnoticed due to the primary teeth still being in place. Also around this time, the primary central incisors will fall out as the permanent central incisors start to push through. The rest of your child's primary teeth will be replaced with permanent ones through age 14.

During the preteen to early teen years, most children will get their 12-year molars, which are the second set of molar teeth that appear behind the first set. Finally, the last teeth to come in are the wisdom teeth. These are the third set of molars, but not everyone gets this set, and most of the people who do will not have room for them and may need to get them surgically removed.
