If you’re suffering from any sports injuries, broken bones, or other type of bone issue, finding an orthopedic doctor who’s knowledgeable is one thing — an orthopedist who is attentive and sensitive is a bonus. For orthopedic surgeon Peter A. Matsuura, M.D., based in Hilo, HI, practicing orthopedics isn’t just about getting the job done. It is also a fulfillment of his childhood aspiration to follow his mother’s footsteps in the medical field and provide care for his community. In short, it’s personal.

orthopedicDr. Matsuura’s brand of care stands out particularly because of his background in the U.S Army National Guard. During deployments to Germany, Afghanistan, and twice to Iraq, he joined the army’s surgical teams to treat orthopedic trauma, broken bones, and other war wounds. Caring for the men and women in service has compelled Dr. Matsuura to go the extra mile — sometimes putting himself into danger’s way — to assist an injured soldier.

The compassion he fostered during his tenure now extends to his current patients, to whom he is equally as committed to. He strongly believes his service in the military has made him a better doctor and surgeon, with a greater sense of empathy for the injured and a much more dedicated sense of service. In fact, Dr. Matsuura continues to attend annual trainings to this day. This results in temporary changes to his regular office hours in the time he is away.  He recently spent two weeks in the California desert with his Army National Guard brigade.  Rest assured, trainings like these are short-term and he has resumed regular working with a refreshed sense of duty to his patients.
