One of the most complicated car systems is the transmission. The transmission experiences the most wear and tear — and even the smallest problems can eventually cause the whole vehicle to shut down. This is why it’s always worth knowing the signs that your transmission needs repair, even if you aren’t a mechanic.

In today’s post, Stillwater Auto Clinic in Minnesota will describe one of the most common transmission problems —leaking or low transmission fluid:

Purpose Of Transmission Fluid

The main function of transmission fluid is to lubricate and cool transmission parts. It’s very important to take action when it leaks or smells burnt, or you will risk running your system too hot and causing sludge buildup, increased friction, corrosion, and the eventual breakdown of your entire system.

Transmission Fluid Appearance

transmissionTransmission fluid is the lifeblood of your transmission, making its bright red coloring rather fitting. If this fluid has been leaking onto your driveway, and the fluid is clear and sweet smelling, all you probably have to worry about is patching a hole and topping up on fluid. However, if the transmission fluid is dark red and accompanied by a burnt smell, you will need more extensive repairs.

Checking Your Transmission Fluid

It’s easy to check if you’re running low. First, you need to warm up your car by taking it for a short drive, and then park on level ground. To check an automatic transmission, lift the hood and read the dipstick. A low reading indicates that you have a leak, as transmission fluid does not “burn off” the way oil does. For a manual transmission, check the fluid level at the transmission case (not with a dipstick).

If your transmission fluid is leaking, stop by Stillwater Auto Clinic for expert diagnosis and repair. For any questions about their car repair service or to set up an appointment, call (651) 351-7188, or email them. You can also visit them online.
