Almost everyone has an icemaker in their freezer.  An automatic icemaker is a great convenience and a simple concept that can create major damage if a leak goes undetected.

Icemaker waterlines should be checked regularly for leaks.  Checking for leaks while cleaning under or behind the refrigerator affords an excellent opportunity to ensure that the areas are dry.

  Possible Causes of Leaks
  1. When pulling out the refrigerator to clean under or behind it, the lines can become kinked or pinched (especially the copper ones).  Copper water lines that coil up behind the refrigerator can cause major damage.  If they become kinked while pushing the refrigerator back into its space, the flow of water can be cut off, or worse, cause a leak.
  2. The nut on the waterline can become loose where it connects to the valve at the wall (or at the refrigerator).
  3. The valve at the wall can have issues causing it to leak.

Preventing Damage from Icemaker Waterlines

  1. Check for any water spots or water damage on a ceiling under your kitchen.
  2. Check for a small puddle of water on the floor in front of the refrigerator.
  3. Check the valve around the connection for moisture.  It is possible for water to run down the wall and not show up on the floor.
  4. While pushing the refrigerator back into its space, be sure to hold the water line up out of the way of the wheels.

In addition, it is a good idea to have a line that is long enough to pull the refrigerator out and get behind it for repairs and cleaning without having to disconnect it (5-7 feet should work).

Don’t neglect your icemaker water line. It can cause major damage to your home if a leak goes undetected. With a regular, quick inspection, you can clean behind your refrigerator AND check to make sure things are still dry. :-)
