Since Hawaii experiences exceptionally warm and wet weather, it is no surprise that insects are common throughout the islands. While roaches, carpenter ants, and centipedes all serve as a nuisance to property owners, perhaps the biggest threat is the termite. According to the experts at Aloha Termite & Pest Control in Wahiawa, HI, there are currently seven known species of these pests in the state, and they're all responsible for some degree of property damage.

To help you determine what type of termites you think you might have, here is a quick guide to the specific species that currently live on the Hawaiian islands:

  • termitesFormosan Subterranean Termite: Even though these termites swarm year-round at night, they're known to be more active during May and June.

  • West Indian Drywood Termite: During the summer months, it's not uncommon to see these termites swarming at night.

  • Lowland Tree Termite: While this termite rarely infests buildings, look for swarms of this variety during the summer.

  • Forest Tree Termite: Like the lowland tree termite, the forest tree termite usually doesn't infest structures, but you will see it flying around during the summer months.

  • Indo-Malaysian Drywood Termite: Known to swarm in the middle of the day in the summertime, these termites can cause extensive damage to your property.

  • Western Drywood Termite: Another daytime swarmer, you will see this type of termite during warmer weather.

  • Pacific Dampwood Termite: Found swarming in the evening or during the night over the course of summer, these termites don't cause as much of a problem as subterranean and drywood termites, but they can still be a nuisance.
