The statistics show that by 2050 Alzheimers cases are expected to at least triple to more than 100 million. Many Alzheimers sufferers are genetically predisposed to the condition, but at least one third of all the cases can be attributed to diabetes, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity. The medical establishment is starting to refer to Alzheimers as Type 3 Diabetes because of the correlation to chronic poor eating habits and imbalanced blood sugar levels.

Exercise might be helpful for people who are at the increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Some studies suggest that even a small amount of physical activity may help to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. The type of exercise for someone with Azlheimers depends on their symptoms, overall health and fitness levels. Make sure you always check with your loved one’s  doctor before they start any exercise program.

Scientists suspect that one of the most dreaded diseases of aging begins altering the function and structure of the brain decades before the first symptoms appear. The disease affects our hippocampus which is the memory processing center of the brain. Some studies suggest that exercise might affect the shrinkage of the hippocampus and the disease’s progression. People who exercise regularly have significantly more brain activity than people who did not exercise. Therefore the brains of people who engage in a physical activity function better.

Studies show that as little as 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise several times a week can significantly improve memory, judgment and cognitive function in just 12 weeks for people with mild Alzheimer’s disease. Physical activity helps the brain to keep flowing and increases chemicals that protect the brain.

It is important to incorporate physical activities that may be mentally or socially engaging, such as dance class, walking with a friend, golfing or engaging in a complete fitness program at Cheetahfit!
