Studies show that hormone levels can change in a positive way when performing prenatal massage. If a women receives bi-weekly massage, stress hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol  can be reduced and “feel good” hormones like serotonin and dopamine are increased. These changes in hormone levels can help with fewer complications during birth and an easier pregnancy overall. There is enough evidence to suggest that not only the mother but also the newborn benefit from a therapeutic massage performed during regular prenatal care.

At Cheetahfit, we also recommend postpartum massage because it helps to restore the orthopedic balance to a new mother from carrying in utero. This protocol also addresses issues like sore shoulders, low back and neck pain caused by carrying and caring for a newborn. Regular massage is one of the few answers that can relieve a mothers sore muscles, pain, and tension while also providing the psycho-emotional benefits of feeling pampered at the same time. Additionally, abdominal massage helps shrink the uterus and relieve subcutaneous scar tissue. It can be performed as early as 24 hours after giving birth.

Benefits of pregnancy massage include: stimulating blood flow, relieving headaches, preventing and or reducing edema by stimulating lymphatic system, helping with muscle spasm and cramps, reducing fatigue and morning sickness, alleviating stress on weight-bearing joints while releasing emotional and physical tension.

Pregnancy massage should be performed with clients positioned on their side using plenty of bolsters and pillows. The client still remains properly draped in all the positions. However there are some instances when massage is not recommended in high risk pregnancies. So women should always contact their doctor and ask for an authorization before getting a massage.  Hot stones or anything which involves heat are not recommended through the pregnancy massage while aromatherapy is generally safe.
