Garbage disposals are a convenient part of many kitchens. But if it's been a while since your last drain cleaning, they can make a kitchen have a bad odor! If yours is starting to smell less than fresh, read on to learn a few good drain cleaning methods that Joe Klosterman Plumbing in Cincinnati recommends.

Ice Cube Method

  • Freeze: Turn on your garbage disposal and let it run cold water. After a few seconds, feed about three to four trays worth of ice cubes into the unit.

  • Flush: The now-frozen debris will have an easier time coming off of the disposal blades. Once you've run out of ice cubes, let the water run for another minute.

  • Deodorize: Feed chopped lemon peels into the garbage disposal with the cold water running.

Hot Water Method

  • drain cleaningPre-Wash: Run hot water for 60 seconds, with your garbage disposal turned on. This will ensure your water is as hot as possible for the next step.

  • Fill The Sink: Turn off your garbage disposal, plug the drain, and fill up the sink with hot water and dish soap.

  • Empty The Sink: Pull on the plug chain, or use another tool to safely remove the drain plug. Immediately switch on the garbage disposal while the hot soapy water goes down to cleanse it.

Baking Soda & Vinegar Method

  • Add Baking Soda: Pour at least half a cup of baking soda into the disposal, below the rubber flaps, making sure it covers the whole chamber.

  • Add Vinegar: Pour the same amount of vinegar down the drain, and don't use your sink for at least an hour.

  • Rinse: Run cold water while letting your disposal run for at least 40 seconds. This method is not recommended for frequent use, but is effective against occasional stubborn smells.
