The last thing you want on the hottest day of the year is to switch on your air conditioning and discover it isn't working. To avoid a calamity like that, take a few minutes this spring to test your air conditioner and make sure it's working properly. Sunshine Air Conditioning and Heating, Yorktown Heights, NY's premier heating and cooling company, suggests the following tips to help make sure your air conditioning system is operating at top performance and efficiency. Sunshine Air Conditioning and Heating has been serving Westchester County for nearly 20 years, performing high-quality furnace and air conditioner repairs and installations at extremely affordable rates.

To test that your air conditioning unit is operating effectively, follow the steps below:

  • Wait For Warm Temps: You should wait until your area receives 48 hours of at least 65 degree Fahrenheit temperatures outside. Operating an air conditioner at temperatures below 60 can damage the unit.
  • Set Fan To Auto: Set the fan to auto and set the thermostat to below the current room temperature. This way, the fan and condenser unit switch on right away.
  • air conditioningLet System Run: Allow the system to operate for eight to 10 minutes until the ductwork temperature balances. Then measure temperatures at the supply and return registers. The difference in temperatures tells you if the unit is working properly or not.
  • Temperature Differential: If the temperature differential is between 14 and 20 degrees, your air conditioner is operating properly. If the temperature differential is less than 14 degrees, your air conditioner is not operating properly. Problems may include loss of refrigerant, dirty coils, or a faulty compressor. If the temperature differential is greater than 20 degrees, you may have an air restriction problem, like a dirty filter, improper ductwork, or a fan fault.
