Three Tips For Improved Parent-Teacher Communication From The Little Gym of The UES, Manhattan, New York

Although both parties have only the best interest of the child at heart, parents and teachers are not known to always have the best communication, which can often result in strained relations. However good parent-teacher communication is truly beneficial to your child, and can set their academic career off on the proper note.

According to The Little Gym of The Upper East Side, parents should always make an effort to communicate often with their child’s educators, whether it is their teacher at school or their instructor from their gymnastics classes.

Try improving your parent-teacher communication skills with these three tips from Parenting Magazine:

  • Let The Teacher Speak First: As tempting as it may be to sing your child’s praises, listen to the feedback your teacher has first. Save your questions for the end of the conversation and you will find that any type of conference will go smoothly.
  • Ask For Examples: Whether it’s criticism or praise, always ask for examples of your child’s work and behaviors. This is incredibly important for speaking with your child later on, and it shows that you are clearly invested in your child’s well-being.
  • Don’t Be Defensive: Above all else, do not be defensive upon hearing feedback. Don’t take this constructive criticism personally; it is not an attack on your parenting, but rather helpful advice from an individual who sees your child in the classroom each day.

Of course this advice also applies to the relationship between parents and instructors. The Little Gym of The Upper East Side is always pushing to improve relations between parents and instructors through consistent progress reports and feedback by email at the end of each two week Learning Unit.
