Families in NYC know that The Little Gym of The Upper East Side is the ideal playspace for young kids. Offering everything from youth health and fitness classes, to summer camps, to family-friendly activities, and even host to kids’ birthday parties, The Little Gym is beloved by kids and families across the Upper East Side community. For this reason, the team behind the kids’ gym loves nothing more than to see kids interact happily and healthily with their surroundings. But they also know that early childhood anxiety can negatively affect this.
Here, The Little Gym shares its favorite tips for helping children cope with their anxiety:
First, if your child’s anxiety is causing you stress, it’s important to know that it’s absolutely normal. Some children experience heightened social anxieties, unexplained phobias, or generalized anxiety throughout their childhood. As a parent, it’s your duty to take the time to listen to your child’s concerns, and make sure your little one understands that no matter what he or she says, you love them without judgment!
Of course, even if the anxieties sound silly, try not to “minimize” their fears. Don’t press the issue (force your child into anything that frightens them), but do try to take small steps that help them move forward, and toward conquering whatever scares them. Gradual immersion, instead of an immediate action, will help your child feel encouraged to combat (and eventually, overcome) his or her problem, instead of feeling further exacerbated by it.
As you discover solutions and comforting coping mechanisms that ease your child through the worst of his or her anxieties, you’ll find that they become few and far in between. And gradually, as he or she grows older, your child will likely blossom into a successful, well-adjusted, and happy-go-lucky kid!
