As some of you that have been following Old Word Plastering, you might remember recently we restored the ornamental plaster in the 35 room Sorg Mansion. Although, I will admit that it was quite a challenge with the ornamentation running in an oval shape about 12 feet wide and 24 feet long with large acanthus leaves and flowers lining the perimeter of the room. The Living Room also had several primary and secondary cornice entities also running around the perimeter of the room.

Now if that wasn’t enough, the whole ceiling had an oil cloth applied to it and overtop of that, a multitude of ornamental filigree, four distinctly different cartoons, and a vast array of vines, leaves, and flowers all linking quite artistically to create an absolutely gorgeous original work of art.

Apparently the pipes broke in 2009 and unfortunately a good portion of this work of art was all but lost. With the technology of mold making, I was able to reproduce the ornamental plaster that was still in good shape.

I was commissioned by the new owners to put things back to its original state. They recently sent an email telling me how pleased they were with the outcome. I believe they said,” very, very pleased and hope our paths cross again”.

I feel blessed that I was chosen for this Ornamental Plaster Restoration project and it speaks volumes to being blessed with the ability to pull off such a task and to put some of history back intact, It was very satisfying knowing I had something to do with this Historic Preservation. I try never to take for granite what I chose for a career and am quite thankful.
