Adolescence is an important time for dental care, because when children start to embrace their growing independence, their habits will inevitably be affected. It's an exciting time for growing up—and to see your dentist!

Pedodontic Associates, the best pediatric dentists on Maui and Oahu, offer the following advice for teens and their families:

  • Lay Off The Colorful Drinks: Many teens relish finally being able to buy their own soda, sports drinks, and coffee. They should remember, however, that even “smart drinks” can be incredibly sugary, and be careful of how much sugar you’ll find in popular flavored espresso drinks. Even drip-coffee can negatively affect teeth, in addition to being habit-forming.
  • imageBrush Regularly—But Not Too Much: Some teens are insecure about their teeth and become compulsive about oral hygiene. Brushing is important, but too much can strip your teeth of their protective enamel. These teens should remember that flossing and regular visits to the dentist are just as important as brushing. If you brush too frequently, your dentist may recommend sugar-free gum during the day.
  • Take Care When Wearing Braces: Teens who wear braces or retainers tend to get more cavities because of the extra challenge they have when brushing or flossing. This makes dental care and regular dentist visits particularly important. Always brush and floss—you will thank yourself when you finally get those braces removed.
  • Think Of Your Wisdom Teeth: Most people don't have enough room in their mouth for wisdom teeth, which are named because they typically emerge during a person's coming-of-age (ages 16 to 21). Always attend your bi-annual dentist appointments, so your dentist can take X-rays and keep track of your wisdom teeth growth. Your dentist may suggest removing them to prevent overcrowding.
