History of The Suzio York Hill Companies: Meriden’s Material Supply Leader, Meriden, Connecticut

In South Central Connecticut, when construction contractors and businesses think about material supply, they think of The Suzio York Hill Companies, based in Meriden. From their humble beginning more than 100 years ago, this family-owned company has become the region's premier ready-mix concrete, crushed stone, and asphalt supply company.

Here is a brief look at the company’s history and what they offer today:

  • Early Years In Construction: After emigrating from Italy, Leonardo Suzio began working in construction in Meriden, CT, and founded the L. Suzio Construction Co., in 1898. Early jobs included Grange Hall. The company soon expanded, building roads and large commercial, institutional, and residential projects, including high schools in Lakeville and Plainville. In the 1920s and ‘30s, the company emphasized infrastructure construction throughout Connecticut, as state and local governments sought Suzio’s company to build their highways, roads, and bridges.

Mount Carmel, Connecticut, was its first quarry site; later sites opened in Cheshire and Woodbury. The company added quarries in Southwick, Massachusetts, and Meriden, Connecticut, which are still operating today. Between the 1930s and the construction boom after World War II, L. Suzio Construction Co. created its ready-mix concrete supply, mason supply, and asphalt supply companies. By the mid-1940s, the company’s focus had become material supply. Leonardo Suzio passed away in 1945.
  • Recent Developments: Suzio’s children and grandchildren continue to manage the company and its subsidiaries. The L. Suzio Concrete Company operates with a new dispatching system that is totally computerized. The facility processes all ready-mix concrete product orders, delivered by the company’s fleet of more than 50 ready-mix trucks. A computerized tracking system monitors truck locations as they deliver throughout Central Connecticut. Plants in Cromwell, New Haven, Wallingford, and Meriden enable the company to serve the region easily.
