It’s easy to neglect some common women’s health issues as we head into summer. Summer calls for spending more time outside and scorching hot days followed by warm summer nights. It’s also short- and swimsuit-season, so you need to take extra good care of your skin to avoid sun damage.

The women’s health experts at Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates in Fairfield and Liberty Township, Ohio, provide a wide range of services for women at every stage of life. Here they explain three healthy habits that will keep you looking good and feeling great all summer long:

  • Wear Loose Clothing: Tight shorts are the norm during the summer, but they don’t bode well with sweaty skin and can cause discomfort or even an infection. Be mindful of your clothing choices and wear loose fitting clothing whenever possible so your skin can breathe. Drawstring pants, Bermuda shorts, and loose-fitting capris and skirts are some comfortable and stylish alternatives for summer.
  • Get Out Of Your Swimsuit: Save swimsuits for the pool and ocean so you aren’t spending all day in a wet swimsuit, which is a haven for bacteria. Change out of a wet swimsuit and throw it in the washing machine as soon as you can. You should also wear cotton panties during the summer, because the fabric permits better airflow, reducing your risk of bacterial and pH imbalances.
  • Women's HealthDon’t Forget The Sunscreen: Protect your skin from UV damage by applying sunscreen at regular intervals throughout the day. Consider using a spray-on sunscreen with a higher SPF when you are planning to be outside for more than an hour. Remember sweat and water can reduce the effects of sunscreen, so you need to re-apply your SPF after swimming.
