Your first ultrasound gives you and your doctor a first look at your developing baby. In addition to identifying your baby’s sex, an ultrasound can reveal important information about your baby’s growth and development. The doctors at Thameside ObGyn Centre explain exactly what will happen at your first ultrasound appointment. The women’s health center provides prenatal care, birth control, and infertility treatments to women in the Groton, CT, area.

Here's what will happen during your first ultrasound procedure:

  • Starting The Process: The ultrasound technician will rub gel on your abdomen before beginning the test. The warm gel helps the ultrasound transducer move across your abdomen easily. First ultrasounds are usually conducted between 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, although the doctor at your women’s health center may recommend one earlier. You won’t have to do anything during the test but lie back and watch your baby on the screen.
  • The First Look: As the ultrasound technician slides the transducer across your abdomen, he or she will point out the various parts of your baby’s body, including the head, heart, abdomen, spine, arms, and legs. You may also be able to see the baby’s heart beat. Measurements will be taken that will help your doctor to determine if your baby is developing on schedule. If you wish, the technician can share the baby’s sex with you, although sometimes it’s impossible to find the right angle to determine the sex.
  • ultrasoundThe Souvenir Photo: The first ultrasound will take about 30 minutes. After the procedure, you’ll receive a few copies of the ultrasound images that you can share with your family and friends. Your doctor at Thameside ObGyn Centre will receive images and a full report of the test results and can share any pertinent findings with you.
