When you have a paving project, the type of material you choose will make a big difference in your results. The terms "asphalt" and "concrete" are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are actually very different materials. Which one you choose can have a profound effect upon your paving job.

GMG General, the premier road repair and paving company in Anchorage, Alaska, explains the differences between asphalt and concrete to help you choose the best material for your project:

  • Appearance: Asphalt, or blacktop, has a uniform, black color, whereas concrete—even with added tinting—eventually fades and discolors over time. That said, you can stain and stamp concrete, making it more flexible for home design projects.
  • ConcreteMaterials & Curing: Asphalt uses tar as an adhesive material, while the adhesive bonds of concrete come from using cement. This means asphalt cures more quickly—you can drive on it in only a hours—while concrete takes several days to completely cure.
  • Cost & Durability: Because asphalt is tar-based, it costs less than concrete does, but it is softer than concrete, degrades faster, and isn't as durable. However, asphalt is easier to repair and can be resurfaced. Concrete is difficult to repair and does not lend itself to resurfacing.
  • Weather Response: Because of its tar content, asphalt tends to soften in high heat, but this generally isn't an issue in Anchorage. Concrete, on the other hand, tends to collect moisture and then crack in sub-freezing temperatures.
