When decorating any living space, you want furniture and accessories that represent your style and taste accordingly. On top of that, you also need furniture that's appropriate for the size of the room you're decorating. If you're trying to spruce up a smaller room, how do you decide on the right furniture?

Cincinnati’s Bova Contemporary Furniture is here to share a few helpful tips for choosing furniture for a small living area:

  • Color & Contrast: Usually, color experts and interior designers say that lighter colors will make your smaller space appear larger. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use darker, bolder colors as accent pieces. If your walls are a light neutral color to make the room look bigger, don’t be afraid of bold pillows and chairs to add that pop of color. Pillows and soft fabrics also break up angles in a space.
  • furnitureSize Matters: If you can’t walk comfortably around furniture, it’s probably too large for the room. Take expanding leaves out of tables, and if the space doesn’t allow for end tables, consider adding shelves to the walls to hold side items like clocks and other decorative pieces. Also, try a love seat instead of a full-sized couch in smaller living rooms.
  • Remove Clutter: Clutter can make a small room even smaller. Don’t over accessorize, and consider storage options for items that aren’t really necessary. Make a list of what's important to show and what's important to save as keepsakes, and organize accordingly. Trunks or coffee tables with built-in storage are great decorative items that also serve as a way to organize clutter.
  • Style Choices: Glass top tables are an easy way to create a visual illusion of more space. Also, choose tables and chairs with thinner legs. Bulky, heavy furniture will overwhelm a small space and will limit how much you can have in the room.
