Spring is finally here, which means it's time to check the HVAC equipment. If your system doesn’t pump cool air properly, you could get stuck with high energy bills or a home that feels like a sauna. You can follow several steps to make sure your AC functions properly for the warm weather ahead.

Here, Northwind Heat & Air, Central Oklahoma’s leading air conditioner installation and repair specialist, shares an HVAC checklist to make sure your equipment works properly this season.

  • Change Filters: You probably haven’t thought about your HVAC filters since last spring. Over the subsequent months, dust and debris have accumulated in the filters. Change the filters before you turn on the AC this spring.
  • Clean Condensate Drain & Pan: The condensate drain removes moisture produced by the AC’s evaporator coil. The drain can get moldy over time, so make sure to clean the drain and pan thoroughly to avoid dangerous airborne pollutants from entering your home. You can also ask a heating and air conditioning technician to clean the drain during routine air conditioning service.

Heating & Air Conditioning

  • Clean The Condenser Coil: The condenser coil, normally located outside, removes heat from the AC. If the condenser coil is clogged, it will block airflow. The coil has to be dismantled to clean, so it’s best to call an air conditioning repair specialist for service.
  • Examine Freon Levels: Freon is a gas or liquid that is used to cool the air that comes out of your HVAC unit. To make sure cool air circulates throughout your home, check the HVAC Freon levels. Add more Freon if needed.
  • Check For Refrigerant Leaks: The weakening of joints in an air conditioner pump causes leaks. Inspect the unit for moisture. If you see a leak, call an air conditioning company for repair or new air conditioner installation.
  • Make Sure Safety Controls & Electrical Disconnects Work: Your HVAC unit has sat unused throughout winter, so test the safety control buttons and electrical disconnect switches to make sure they work. If there is a bug in the electrical wiring, call a central heating and air conditioning specialist for repair.
