Want to stay fit without joining a gym — or even leaving the house? You can! Today, StayFIT Physical Therapy in Aiea and Kapolei, HI, wants to share some easy at-home exercises for people who'd like to stay in good shape in the privacy of their own homes. Routine exercise is an important part of staying healthy, but you don't have to overwork yourself to do it, especially if you've recently recovered from injuries or muscle strains.

Here are some popular — and easy! — at-home exercises you can try:

  • Wall Push-Ups: These are easier than traditional floor push-ups, and ideal for people who want to start slow. Put your hands on a wall, shoulder-width apart, go back a step, and lift your heels. With your back straight, lean on your palms and bend your elbows outwards for your first push-up. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
  • physical therapyThe Plank: Tone your abs and lower back with this exercise. Beginning on all fours (like the beginning of a floor push-up) with your arms straight, hands on the ground, extend one leg behind you with your weight resting on your toes, with the other leg bent at the knee; this is your resting position. Extend the bent leg back to join the other, and hold for 20 seconds. Now bend your other leg at the knee and rest for 20 seconds. Repeat a few times for each leg. Remember to keep your back as straight as possible to get the most out of the exercise.
  • Squats: Stand up straight with your feet wider than shoulder width, with your toes pointing slightly outwards. Now slowly bend your knees until your thighs are almost parallel to the ground (don't go further than is comfortable), and slowly come back up. Repeat 10 times or more, keeping your back vertical and your abdomen engaged throughout this exercise.

Regular exercise helps decrease your chance of injury and muscle strains, but you should seek physical therapy if you feel intense pain or discomfort while moving. There's a difference between "good" pain and "bad" pain!
