Staging to Sell (or Stay) in Spring:

Ten years ago it was rare to have a Wellesley MA home seller or builder “stage” a home for sale. These days it is common (thanks, HGTV!); we are seeing many new homes as well as existing homes staged to show them off to their best advantage.

What is home staging? It involves working with the “flow” of a home, eliminating clutter, editing and arranging furniture, and even enhancing curb-appeal. With the aid of a professional home stager, your house can make a notable first impression on potential homebuyers. As a broker, I feel so strongly about staging, that I offer my sellers a complimentary session with a professional stager to help their homes shine! Sometimes our stager will recommend removing and rearranging furniture. If needed, she can also bring in furniture and accessories to help buyers envision their lives in your inviting home.

Even if you are not considering a move, this Spring, try staging your own home for you! It is always fun to look at your living space with a fresh pair of eyes with a nod to the changing seasons. With that in mind, here is a list of 5 staging suggestions:

1. Spruce up your entryway. Pick up a new welcome mat. Add a few plants in colorful pots. Add a chair with a cushion or two to enjoy Spring weather.

2. Wash your windows and raise your blinds to let the sun shine in.

3. Swap out snug and dark for bright and cheery: Cozy afghans and throws can be put away. Bring in some throws and pillow in Spring colors. Feature things that bring your joy.

4. Fresh flowers are welcome in any room.

5. Declutter your kitchen counters. Put away those infrequently used appliances. I am guilty of keeping the slow cooker AND the pressure cooker out. Find a convenient place to store. However, the coffeepot STAYS. (See #3)

Once you have implemented these changes, relax with a cup of coffee in your light, joyful space. Who knows, maybe you will even be inspired to “stage” a closet or two!

Remember, staging is not the same as decluttering. Staging is way more fun! I borrowed that famous book from the library The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up and never opened it. Who wants to tidy? Not me! Call it sorting, reorganizing, STAGING…

If you lack confidence in your ability to stage, call your Martha Stewart (we all have one!) and head to a home goods store. You will be amazed at the affordable pretty things available to spruce up your home.
