Women's Wellness Center of New York is committed to providing the best women’s care services to their NYC-area patients. One of their core beliefs is that knowing your body can help you stay informed and aware of any potential women’s health issues that may arise. One such issue is abnormal uterine bleeding.

If you’ve experienced bleeding after sex, it can be a bit alarming, but it doesn’t necessarily indicate a serious health issue. Here, Dr. Taraneh Shirazian and her professional team at Women’s Wellness Center of New York explain what it could mean:

  • Dryness: Bleeding after sex could just be a result of vaginal dryness or lack of lubrication, which may make women more likely to experience light bleeding or spotting. It’s also possible that this dryness could have caused a small laceration in the vagina during sex, which could lead to slight bleeding.

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

  • Your Uterus Is Telling You Something: If you experience post-sex bleeding in addition to other types of abnormal uterine bleeding, such as bleeding between periods, it’s possible that there could be a uterine abnormality. For instance, abnormal uterine bleeding may be a result of uterine fibroids or polyps, which are conditions that Dr. Shirazian can diagnose and treat.
  • Other Causes: There are many causes for post-sex bleeding. It could be a side effect of a certain birth control pill, STD, or very rarely, an indication of a cervical abnormality. With that said, post-sex bleeding is not often a sign of any abnormal issues, so keep in mind that it’s rarely a serious health issue.

If you experience abnormal uterine bleeding on an ongoing basis or bleed frequently between periods, it’s always a good idea to discuss it with your doctor. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Shirazian at Women’s Wellness Center of New York, call (647) 754-3300 or visit their website.
