In the eternal fight against the elements, there are many waterproof coatings you can choose for your roof, whether it's on a shingled residential home or a commercial flat roof. Tory’s Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc. is Pearl City’s trusted source for professional roofing services. In business since 1972, when it comes to the unique waterproofing needs of Hawaii's largest island, look no further than Tory's Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc.

In terms of flat roofs – typical of commercial and multiple unit properties – elastomeric roof coatings work best. These are different from acrylic coatings in that they are solvent based.

While that alone doesn’t make a waterproof roof coating good or bad, the things to look at it terms of a quality coating are:

  • Elasticity - Whether or not your coating can move with the temperature changes to the roof.
  • Tensile Strength – The ability to hold together without breaking.
  • Perm Factor – Resistance to moisture passing through the coating. A lower number shows greater moisture resistance.
  • Moisture Gain by Weight – The ability to absorb water vs. repel water and protect the roof. You want a roof coating that repels water away from the roof.
  • Peel Adhesion – The ability of the coating to remain adhered to the roof’s surface even under severe weather conditions.
  • Tear Resistance – The higher the tear strength, the greater resistance to withstand minor defects caused after installation, such as roof movement and foot traffic.
  • Reflectivity - A reflective roof surface allows all buildings to remain cool, which in turn allows it to work more efficiently and reduce maintenance caused by UV damage.

Before you waterproof your home or office, check the specs on your elastomeric coating.
