If the last time you could jump start a car was in high school, it might be time for a refresher! Every driver should know this skill so they can get themselves out of a jam or help someone else. Here to explain the basics is Charlotte AutoFair, home of the best vintage car show in North Carolina.

Follow these steps to jump start a car with a dead battery:

  • Troubleshoot The Battery: If you turn the ignition and hear no engine sounds at all, then you have a dead battery and need a jump.

  • Locate Jumper Cables: Everyone should have a couple of these in the trunk. If you don't, go pick some up today, because these inexpensive cables will be worth it in a jam.
  • Get Help: If you get a dead battery at Charlotte's best vintage car show, you should have no trouble at all finding someone to help! With over 10,000 car fans to choose from, you can bet most of them can do a jump start.
  • Make Positive Connections: Making sure both cars are off, first clip the red (positive) cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery, then clip the other end to the positive terminal on the working battery.
  • Make Grounding Connections: Clip the black cables to the negative terminals of the batteries, then clip the red cable to the positive terminals.
  • Start The Cars: Let the working car run for about two minutes, then start the other. If it doesn't start, wait another few minutes and try again. Once it starts, keep it running! Remove the connections in reverse order starting with the grounded clip, then drive around for 20 minutes to finish charging the battery.
