Even the tropical island paradise, Hawaii, has its stormy seasons. With high winds and torrential rains, Hawaii's storms are as vicious as any tempest, ripping up shingles and toppling trees with abandon. If you're a homeowner, are you prepared to identify potential storm damage to your rooftop?

To help you with this important task, the experienced roofers at Rainbow Roof Maintenance in Honolulu has listed these tips for assessing roof damage after a storm with heavy winds and rain:

  • Check The Ground: The day after a big storm, do a survey of your property. Is there anything that doesn't belong, such as shingles, metal flashing, or pieces of fascia? You should also look up at your eaves and note any damages or irregularities.
  • Quality RoofingAssess Gutters & Downspouts: Sometimes, bits of asphalt shingle can come trickling down through your downspouts. If the water is speckled with shingle granules, you will need to call a roofer as soon as possible, as a “bald” shingle will leak.
  • Inspect The Trees: Are the trees or shrubs on your property missing any branches? Without getting on your roof, can you see any tree branches up there? If so, call a roofer to remove the debris. If you climb up there yourself, you could slip and fall, why take the chance. If an entire tree fell on your roof, evacuate the area call your insurance agent and a roofer has assessed the damage.
  • Look Indoors: If you don't notice any storm damage from outside, go inside. Check your ceilings or the attic for any leaks or signs of water damage—look for discolored spots or wet areas.  Leaks can also come in through skylights, P.V. mounts and other roof accessories, such as vents and pipes.
