Brushing your teeth is the best way to freshen your breath, but bad breath can strike when a toothbrush isn’t available. The next time your breath becomes a little stale, Four Corners Dental Group suggests trying a natural breath freshener.

The Anchorage and Wasilla-based family dentistry recommends trying the following foods to sweeten your breath:

  • Crunchy Fruit & Veggies: Apples and carrots are nature’s toothbrushes. Because these foods are crunchy, they help remove food debris from your teeth. When debris remains stuck between teeth, it eventually begins to smell. A few bites of an apple or carrot will help dislodge food particles and get rid of the source of your bad breath.

  • Fresh Herbs: Keep cloves or fennel seeds on hand to fight bad breath. Thanks to their antiseptic properties, these foods can help reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth. Munching on some fresh mint, parsley, or cilantro will also freshen your breath. Chlorophyll, the chemical substance that gives those plants their green color, is very effective in removing odors.
  • Dairy: Say goodbye to bad breath with a snack of yogurt or cheese. Eating a few slices of cheese helps neutralize acids in the mouth, while consuming yogurt decreases the amount of hydrogen sulfide in your mouth. Hydrogen sulfide produces a very unpleasant rotten egg odor.
  • Citrus: Make your breath lemony fresh with a few bites of a lemon. If lemons are too tart, eat an orange instead. Eating these citrus foods can trigger an increase in saliva production. Saliva helps wash away food particles and substances that can cause breath odor. Be careful, however; a diet that's too acidic can damage your tooth enamel.

Frequent bad breath can be a sign of a dental or gum issue. If tooth brushing and diet changes don’t sweeten your breath, it’s time to visit the family dentistry professionals at Four Corners Dental Group.
