It’s not uncommon for a person to experience a canker sore at some point, but that doesn’t stop it from being a painful nuisance. Although canker sores typically clear up on their own, Cincinnati, OH, dentist, Dr. Robert Petrtyl, has some tips for alleviating the discomfort you might experience while having one.

A canker sore is actually a small form of an ulcer, and it can generally appear anywhere in the mouth (aside from the lips, top of the tongue, or hard palate). There are both minor canker sores, which are small in size and typically clear up within two weeks, and major canker sores, which are much larger. Although major canker sores can last up to six weeks, they typically heal on their own as well. While having a canker sore can be inconvenient and you may experience discomfort while talking or eating, there is no cure for them at the present time, and the precise cause for them is unknown. You may be able to alleviate the pain or lessen the frequency of their recurrence by avoiding irritating foods, like spicy foods and citrus fruit. You may also opt to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid gum chewing.

Minor canker sores tend to happen most often in patients ages ten to 20, so if your child is experiencing them regularly, it may be a good idea to speak with someone who is experienced in pediatric dentistry. If a canker sore is especially painful, your dentist may prescribe a rinse or ointment to alleviate the discomfort. Also, if a canker sore is unusually large, spreading, or coupled with a fever, call your dentist.

Dr. Robert Petrtyl is experienced in pediatric dentistry and treats patients of all ages in the Cincinnati, OH, area.
