Very few people demonstrate the popular adage “You’re never too old to learn” quite like technology school Touro College GST graduate Nancy Shaw. Both in her personal life and her work with her young students at P.S. 239 in Ridgewood, Queens, Nancy Shaw extols the values of curiosity and a constant fascination with the world around regardless of age and experience. This dedication to a lifelong path of learning has earned Nancy Shaw the title of “Teacher of the Year,” along with the praise of countless grateful parents.
Nancy Shaw began her journey in education with her first Master’s degree in Reading and Early Childhood. She came to Touro GST for her second Master's in Instructional Technology, which rekindled her passion for teaching.
As a computer teacher, Nancy Shaw strives to challenge each child and spark curiosity in everything they do. Through reading and technological application, her students embarked on a fantastic project of writing and editing a book. The curriculum included teaching children how to search websites for information, how to decide what information was important and what should not be used, and how to search for appropriate images. Using online research to learn about the essential components of a book, students become empowered to write and share their words with friends and family.
Through her program, children improve upon their reading and writing skills while becoming computer literate as well. As Nancy stated in regards to her curriculum, "That's my obsession – being literate." As she saw her classroom dedicate their books to family, friends, and even a classmate who had been hit by car and had died, Nancy became truly awestruck by the work of her students.
This classroom project was influenced by Nancy Shaw’s own final project for EDIT 692 Projects in Educational Technology, which involved the development of a computer-based curriculum for 2nd grade students of all levels. Nancy Shaw’s time in Touro College GST’s Instructional Technology program gave her the practical tools necessary to enhance her student’s learning experience in the classroom, and to encourage them along in future academic endeavors.
