Alumni of the Touro College Graduate School of Technology have access in a world of career options as a result of the school’s three cutting-edge continuing education programs: Master of Science in Information Systems, Master of Science in Instructional Technology, and Master of Arts in Web & Multimedia Design.
As the Fall 2013 semester approaches, Touro College puts the spotlight on three successful alumni in the hopes of inspiring this year’s new class of graduate students. This week, learn about how alumna Uzma Harris, a graduate of the Master of Science in Instructional Technology, used her Touro College GST education to become a successful technology teacher in NYC.
- Tell us about your time at Touro College GST"I enrolled in Touro the same year I became a technology teacher in the NYC DOE. The classes that I took provided me with an avenue to certification which has led to many further opportunities within the DOE and within Touro itself. I now serve as an adjunct professor at Touro, where I teach an undergraduate technology course in the NYSCAS Department."
- When did you decide to enroll to Touro College GST?"When I first started as a computer teacher, I quickly realized that there was so much that I did not know. GST classes provided me with a solid background from the history of computers in education to the importance of developing a technology plan that fits your needs to the different ways to engage students with technology. Networking classes have been a tremendous help as I often serve as a liaison between my school and the DOE Network Operations Center - I can understand basic concepts and troubleshoot issues easily at my school."
- Which classes helped you most in your role as a teacher?"Every single class I took has been relevant to my position. Several classes involved programming and online class / instructional design and I have used that knowledge to teach my students an entire unit on programming. In fact my students share that it is their favorite activity! I am also able to provide my students with online classes that are well designed and follow the UBD model also advocated by the NYC DOE, particularly in the shift to the more rigorous Common Core Standards. In addition, all GST classes provide an active learning experience and help students to meet ISTE Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills."
- How did Touro College’s Career Services help you?"Robert Grosberg in Career Services was wonderful in assisting me to find a part-time job. He was very patient and always responded in a timely fashion. We also met face to face; Robert was very generous with his time and provided me with lots of invaluable advice. He helped me to revise my resume - we must have gone through about 6 different revisions. In the end, my resume really showcased my skills and knowledge and helped me to secure employment with a tutoring company from the comfort of my home."
Uzma Harris concluded her interview stating, “Touro College GST has provided me with a real sense of community and belonging. There is a huge advantage of being part of a program that is intimate enough to provide you with individual support; you don't feel like simply another student or another statistic.”
