The Master of Arts in Web & Multimedia Design program at Touro College Graduate School of Technology (GST) was created and implemented by Jesse Epstein, a filmmaker and media business professional for over 35 years who currently serves as the chair of the program and full time professor at the graduate school. Epstein is dedicated to digital media in its proper cultural context and giving back to students who share his passion.
From its inception, the program has appealed to three types of students: 1) design students who have been working in the industry and want to update their skills to adapt to changing technologies; 2) students interested in teaching design; 3) students with no design background who want to change their field and act on their interest in design. In the fluid, ever-changing world of technology, the consistent acquisition of new skills through higher education or active participation in the industry is crucially important.
Epstein’s ‘Media & Culture’ course is the only theoretical class in the program. The curriculum encompasses an exploration of the interaction between media and culture over time. From the printing press to mobile technologies; the impact of technology on culture (and vice versa) is integral to any media education. According to Epstein, it is this theoretical foundation that distinguishes Touro College Graduate School of Technology from design programs at technical institutes.
Those students who are new to design are also required to take semester long intensive courses on the foundation and history of design, basic web programming, and foundations of web programming which enable them to succeed in the program. Epstein also teaches a course in digital photography for designers.
At Touro GST, an education in web and multimedia design is always transmitted through learning technologies and solving problems using hands-on scenarios. Epstein is as vital a resource to Touro College Graduate School of Technology, as the graduate school is to design students.
