New York City is an epicenter for the ever-advancing technology industry. With new roles and systems developed every day, there is a growing need for highly trained and well-educated experts who can manage the great task of manipulating technology to the fullest potential. Touro College Graduate School of Technology (GST) is educating the technology leaders of tomorrow with graduate programs in Information Systems, Web & Multimedia Design, and Instructional Technology.
This month, students began a new semester of exciting courses. The graduate school’s Masters of Science in Information Systems program adapts its curriculum to the needs of both their students, and the industries they strive to achieve in. With career options from Database Administrator to Chief Technology Officer, these students will obtain the tools they need to make groundbreaking contributions.
This semester, many students will be enrolled in Touro College GST’s new Geographic Information Database Systems course. What is commonly referred to as GIS is an increasingly relevant specialty. GIS falls within the broader academic discipline of Geoinformatics. This science and technology enables individuals and companies to collect, organize, analyze, and present all types of geographic data.
The following is information about Touro College GST’s newest course:
This course is a hands-on class which introduces the concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data through practical exercises using a popular software package. Students will learn background concepts for a comprehensive understanding of GIS operations, the operations themselves, and different types, structures, and uses of GIS data.
It is an ambitious curriculum with institutional objectives such as:
- Understanding how to select the appropriate technology hardware and software.
- Understanding and applying current information technologies for management.
- Applying appropriate research tools to gather relevant information related to information systems.
Through lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises, students will finish the semester with a great deal of applicable knowledge and expertise. In the era of “Big Data” and all it entails, Touro College GST graduates are positioning themselves by acquiring expert knowledge, experience, and software training to both contribute and innovate in the technology industries.
