Dr. David K. Hiranaka, the premier cosmetic surgeon of Kailua Kona, HI, has been providing his patients with the most advanced laser treatments, face lift and neck lift surgeries, and other reconstructive surgeries for years. If you're planning your first cosmetic surgery, you may not be familiar with everything you need to know before the procedure. Dr. Hiranaka is here to share some basic pre-operation guidelines for patients to follow before undergoing a cosmetic surgery:

  • No Liquids: Patients who plan to have general anesthesia or intravenous sedation must not drink any water or other liquids for at least eight hours prior to the surgery. Dr. Hiranaka says that patients who need to take medications can take small sips of water with their doses, but nothing more than that.

  • No Supplements Or Smoking: Smokers who are preparing for a cosmetic surgery procedure must refrain from smoking for 48 hours prior to the surgery. Cigarette smoke negatively affects circulation, and good circulation is necessary to get the best results. Additionally, smokers and non-smokers alike should not take Vitamin E, garlic, or Ginkgo Biloba one week prior to surgery.
  •  Know What To Leave And What To Take: Prepare for the day of the surgery by leaving your jewelry, makeup, and contact lenses (if you wear them) at home. Patients should have a designated driver bring them home after the surgery, and anyone with special medical requirements should bring their medications along with them.
