While any dentist will tell you how important it is to have a regular dental hygiene routine, you may not know that drinking water can help you fight cavities, too. Public drinking water contains fluoride, which prevents tooth decay. Fluoride occurs naturally in water, but many community water supplies add a little more of it to make the fluoride levels optimal for our teeth. Here are a few reasons drinking fluoridated water is good for families:

  • It Prevents Tooth Decay: Ingesting fluoride in water is the most efficient way to prevent tooth decay. Children who live in towns and cities without fluoridation are much more likely to undergo dental surgery at some point.
  • It’s Safe & Effective: For over 70 years, data has shown that community water fluoridation is safe for people of all ages and helps keep tooth enamel strong against cavities.
  • It Saves Money: Dental care can be expensive, even with insurance, but the average cost per person to put fluoride in  public water is less than the cost of one dental filling.
  • It’s Natural. Fluoride is naturally present in groundwater and in the ocean. Adjusting the level for our benefit can be likened to fortifying other foods, like salt with iodine, milk with vitamin D, and orange juice with calcium. It’s extremely beneficial to public health.
