Most women have heard of endometriosis, an often painful condition where tissue normally found in the uterus travels to areas outside of the womb. Like many women’s health issues, however, easy, clear information around endometriosis can be difficult to find. Nationally recognized gynecologist Dr. William M. Jamieson, M.D. in Cincinnati is here to share some quick facts on this condition:

  • Causes: While the exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, one theory is that it stems from retrograde menstruation, or blood and tissue traveling into instead of out of the body during a woman’s period. Most women experience this phenomenon to some extent, and it is not problematic in most cases. Occasionally, however, the unshed tissue begins to grow inside the body, resulting in inflammation, irritation, and scarring.
  • Diagnosis: For most women, pelvic pain is the first sign of endometriosis. Often worst during menstruation, this pain can also occur during sex, bowel movements, or urination. Infertility, with or without pelvic pain, may also be caused by endometriosis. If your gynecologist suspects you may have endometriosis, they’ll begin the diagnostic process by talking to you about your symptoms and conducting a physical exam. They may also want to perform an ultrasound or a laparoscopy to look for signs of endometriosis.
  • Treatment: Endometriosis may be treated with drugs, gynecological surgery, or a combination thereof. The surgical route will involve entering the abdomen, either through laparoscopy or opening the abdominal cavity, and destroying the endometriosis implants there. Frequently, this will be followed by a course of medication intended to prevent new implants from taking hold.
