A bankruptcy filing often comes with a mix of emotions, from relief that you've finally found a way out of your crushing debt to fear of what your financial future may hold. But you can start calming those fears right away by taking some small but critical steps to rebuild your financial future. Greene Law, P.C., a Farmington, Connecticut-based bankruptcy attorney, shares three ways you can start off strong as you set out on the road to financial stability.

  • Rebudget: Now that you're starting with a clean state, it's a perfect time to rethink your monthly budget. You're likely going to have some different figures to work with now since most of your debt has either been discharged or restructured (Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcy, respectively). Consider these new figures and how they can best be applied toward monthly bills; anything left over should go into a savings account or emergency fund.
  • Obtain A Credit Card: One of the best ways to rebuild your credit after bankruptcy is to start establishing a new credit line as soon as you can. This is easier said than done, however, especially in the first year following your bankruptcy filing. You may want to try to find a secured credit card, which operates on the same lines as a debit card but also helps you reestablish credit. With any card, be careful of high-interest rates and finance charges. Always pay your balance off each month. Your attorney at Greene Law, P.C., will help you find ways to restore credit after your filing.
  • Don't Be Ashamed: Bankruptcy can, unfortunately, come with a certain amount of stigma, due mostly to the fact that there are many misconceptions about what bankruptcy is and is not. You should not be ashamed or feel guilty that you've filed. Bankruptcy is a protective measure put in place to safeguard your financial interests and future. Don't let your filing hold you back from rebuilding your financial future. Let Greene Law, P.C. walk you through the bankruptcy process today.
