Charlotte AutoFair is a bi-annual car show in Charlotte, North Carolina that features a wide array of antique cars and collector cars. This highly popular event draws car enthusiasts from all over the country. Many car lovers come to meet other vintage car owners to swap stories and tips.

Small paint scratches are an inevitable aspect of car ownership, but they can easily be fixed if you know what you're doing. If you’re wondering how to get minor scratches to disappear, here is a step-by-step tutorial from the team at Charlotte AutoFair:

  • Assess The Damage: Take a look at the area in question, and make sure it is a scratch as opposed to debris on the paint surface. Once you know it’s a scratch, determine how deep it goes. Ideally, it will only affect the clear coat. If you can see bare metal at the bottom of the scratch, the part will likely need to be repainted.
  • Wash & Dry: Wash and dry your car thoroughly before beginning any repairs. If your car is dirty while you attempt to repair a scratch, it can make things worse.
  • Sand: Lightly wet sand the scratch area with 2,000 to 3,000-grit sandpaper. Always sand diagonally across the scratch, alternate the direction evenly, and keep the area wet and clean of dirt and debris. If the scratch is too deep, wet sanding may not be the best option; you could risk sanding through your clear coat.
  • Rinse & Dry: Once you’ve finished wet sanding the scratch, rinse the area clean, and dry it with a clean microfiber towel.
  • Apply Buffing Compound To Scratch Area: Don’t turn on the buffer yet, but apply the buffing compound using the buffer pad.
  • Buff: Polish the area with the rubbing compound using an electric buffer. This should be done quickly; avoid buffing the spot too long to avoid burning through the paint.
  • Wash & Wax: Once you have buffed the scratch smooth, wash the area again to remove any remaining rubbing compound, and then wax the area to protect paint you have repaired.
