With more than six decades of catering expertise, the chefs at Marians Catering have learned a thing or two about what it takes to serve only the freshest ingredients without wasting money.

Here are some money-saving tips that will have you eating well without throwing your hard-earned money down the drain:

  • Buy only what you know you are going to use right away, especially with meat and fruits and vegetables that have a shorter lifespan—such as berries, mushrooms, bananas, and green beans.
  • Store fruits and vegetables separately. Many fruits give off high levels of ethylene gas. This gas can cause vegetables to spoil faster if stored together.
  • Not everything needs to be refrigerated. Produce such as potatoes, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and squash should not be refrigerated.
  • Store sensitive items at the bottom of the refrigerator, which is the coldest part. This is where meat is best stored for preservation outside of the freezer.
  • Line crisper drawers with paper towels to help absorb moisture that causes vegetables to rot.
  • Don’t store eggs in the door of your refrigerator, as this area is most susceptible to warming because of the door opening and closing.
  • Wrap and freeze meats if you don’t plan on eating them within two days.
