Nothing looks more sad and decrepit than an asphalt driveway full of weeds. They’re aggressive enough to grow even through the toughest sealant on the market! Thankfully, you can count on Beausoleil & Sons for asphalt repair if your driveway has seen the wrath of weeds. In the meantime, give it all you've got to rid your driveway and walkway of pesky weeds.

Here are some home remedies to try when weeds start to rear their ugly heads:

  • Corn gluten meal has herbicidal effects on weeds. It inhibits root formations on newly germinated seeds, which kills the plant. But because the meal only affects weeds that haven't sprouted yet, it’s important to apply it earlier in the season.
  • Hand-pull large weeds growing through the asphalt. If they haven’t developed their seeds, use the soil from the weeds to smother others in the same patch of ground from growing. If the soil has seeds, remove and discard them.
  • White vinegar is strong enough to dry out weeds. However, if your asphalt hosts a variety of other plants, only use full-strength white vinegar.
  • Table salt, like vinegar, will dry out weeds. While it’s not as effective as vinegar, it will still dehydrate the roots and leaves of the weeds. Make sure not to use salt near a garden or lawn. It can seep into the soil and make the entire area a "no man’s land" for other plants.
  • Boiling water works when all else fails. Extremely hot water will cook and kill the weed’s cells. Be safe when trying this method, and make several trips to the kitchen in case you can’t carry a large amount of boiling water.

When you’ve finally killed all the weeds, have your driveway professionally sealed as soon as possible. Beausoleil & Sons’ paving and asphalt repair services will heal the cracks and holes in your driveway caused by pesky weeds.
