No matter how careful you are behind the wheel, emergencies still happen. Tires go flat, engines overheat, a random deer jumps out on a lonely, dark road and you find yourself with a shattered windshield. Sure-Drive Driver’s Training Inc. in northern Kentucky understands that accidents and emergencies happen, which is why you should be prepared. They have some advice for stocking your car with safety gear; something you don’t always learn in driving school.

In the age of technology, many of us just rely on our cell phones. Yes, they are handy, but what if there’s no service in the area or the phone has run out of batteries? With just a little time and effort, you can make your local or long distance trips a little safer.

Try adding the following nine items to your trunk:

  • Maps: Get the real ones; don’t just rely on your cell phone!
  • Blanket: It can get cold in any location, so keep yourself warm.
  • Water: You need it to stay hydrated. It can also be handy if the engine overheats.
  • Fire Extinguisher: You'll need one to prevent or put out small fires.
  • Jumper Cables: You'll need these to jump start a car battery. These are helpful to own because even if you don’t know how to use them, the person who pulls over might.
  • First Aid Kit/Flashlight: A supply of band-aids, gauze, iodine and a light to locate everything is extremely helpful. Extra batteries for the flashlight are helpful as well.
  • Flares: This is useful for protecting yourself and preventing other drivers from hitting you on the side of the road. You can also call for help.
  • Ice Scraper: It will prevent ice crystals from covering your windshield and obstructing your view.
  • Spare Tire: You never know when you might need one!

Even adding a few of these items in your car can help during an emergency. The team at Sure-Drive Driver’s Training Inc. have more than 25 years' experience teaching people in northern Kentucky how to drive safely.
