Have You Found Your Courage?

Courage is something that everybody wants - It implies good character and makes us worthy of respect. Kids grow up with inspirational tales of courageous heroes like David and Goliath, Luke in Star wars, or the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. When the Cowardly Lion asked about his courage, Oz replies, "You have plenty of courage. All you really need is some confidence in yourself. Every living thing is afraid when it faces danger. True courage is facing danger even when you are afraid."

Nobody is born courageous; in fact, Oz is right, we are born with a tendency to be fearful. Fear serves an important role in our lives for caution, good judgement and survival. But if we tell ourself, "I am so afraid, I can't do this and I can't do that! I wish I was brave but I'm not" we may dim our sense of the innate courage that lies within us.

Courage is a part of all of us and we each discover it in out own time. It is a treasure that we may find when we least expect it. Sometimes we walk past our fear to get to what is on the other side and in the process find our courage. Or perhaps we boldly grab hold of our determination and decide we can do whatever we put out mind to - and in that moment we experience our courage. For some, encouragement and support from others to move forward toward a long sought goal may be how we find our brave self.

If you are having trouble finding it, dig a little deeper. And be kind to yourself in the process. Remember that being courageous doesn't mean you need to 'slay the dragon'. It may just mean that after a difficult day, you find the strength to you tell yourself, "I'll try again tomorrow". And courageously, you get up the next morning and do just that.

Congratulations, you found it!
